Back in the day, when people actually visited video rental places, movies that either had a short life in theaters or went straight to video basically had to hope the millions of people sifting through the new release shelves would find their video cover and hope that its lack of familiarity would go overlooked. Those movies have given way to Netflix recommendations, but it’s pretty much the same thing. Recently, we’ve seen new films that know they have a niche audience advertise on YouTube and go On Demand before the movie even hits theaters. It’s not new in this day and age, it just has become a lot more common. Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie and God Bless America Look For A Niche Audience Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie recently played at Sundance, and then it went to an On Demand service that also includes rental on iTunes and YouTube. That’s something we’ll be seeing a lot of in the future. Because frankly, a movie like Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie has very little chance of being a success in actual movie theaters. I know in my neck of the woods, this movie is only going to get a special Friday and Saturday midnight showing when it finally does arrive in theaters, and then it will be gone. Here’s the trailer ( warning – it’s a red band trailer, with all the bad language, violence, and dirty stuff ): Click here to watch the video.

I’m on a plane as I write this, and still working–see how dedicated I am to the cause? Anyway, there’s a ton of emails in the inbox already today from CES (which is where I’m headed) and this one caught my eye because it’s some big names that are getting into not only, original online web series, but also interactive online original web series. Tom Hanks, and Yahoo! are partnering on a project called Electric City, which sounds like a place I might hang out

Interactive video ads was something I thought we would see a lot of in 2011 and, we did, just not up to the level I had expected.

Last week, Advertising Age published a piece about the growth of YouTube in Brazil. It’s a stunning and rapid growth, and one that’s getting the attention of advertisers from around the world. Combined with the recent moves in that market from Poptent and Netflix, it’s just one more piece of evidence that there’s a video revolution going on in Brazil

Maybe Netflix was right after all. No, not in the way they handled their price increase, but maybe in their logic for creating the increase in the first place. See, we’ve always assumed that Netflix’s price hike this summer was about setting the stage for streaming video as the primary service for the future

If you have an Xbox 360 and are in the Xbox Live preview program, you can now be a beta participant in YouTube’s new app for the console . Coming days after Microsoft introduced a new dashboard for the service, Xbox 360 officially becomes yet another place where you can watch YouTube, which is good news for the world’s dominant video site because as we covered a month or so ago, gaming consoles are the main source for watching online video on TV . The new service will also be able to be controlled through Kinect.

I interviewed Orabrush’s Chief Marketing Officer Jeff Harmon, to talk about how they used YouTube to sell over a million units of their tongue cleaner and sign major deals with big box stores, and why they say you have to “screw viral videos” if you want to be successful with today’s online audiences’ increased social expectations.
