Hollywood Video Marketing Efforts: 21 Jump Street Shows How It’s Done

Despite Disney apparently doing everything in its power to try to make John Carter into something it isn’t, it mustered a disappointing $30 million in its opening weekend and fell short to The Lorax in its second week.  However, one thing everyone needs to keep in mind is that movies are more global than ever, and Carter is poised to at least make its money back with worldwide numbers when all is said and done, so don’t focus solely on North American box office.  This week, 21 Jump Street is all alone save for some limited releases.  21 Jump Street is the antithesis of John Carter .

Hollywood Marketing Efforts: The Curious Case Of John Carter

So last week I said Project X would run neck-and-neck with The Lorax over the weekend.  I figured that the estimates were too low for Project X and too high for The Lorax , and it turned out that Project X ‘s estimates were just a bit low, but The Lorax ‘s were way too low.  And The Lorax went out and smashed out $70 million over the weekend to Project X ‘s still-admirable $20 million.  This week, we have a giant blockbuster film that I don’t think too many people want to see, and I want to delve into the strange case of Disney’s John Carter marketing, along with a movie that might surprise this weekend, Silent House , and one you may not have known existed or was being released: the Eddie Murphy movie A Thousand Words . John Carter: A How-Not-To In Hollywood Marketing Regardless of whether John Carter does a fair amount of business this weekend or not, it’s immaterial to how the movie has been advertised and presented.  The movie simply has not been given a campaign that makes everyone who would want to see this movie get excited about it.  And there is lots of blame to hand around.  I’ll start with the teaser trailer, which was Disney’s best attempt: Click here to watch this video.

When Google’s Android Market launched three and a half years ago, it was a standalone app store that did not sell e-books, music, or videos. However, over the past year, the Android Market has grown into much more than an app store – they are now a major provider of digital content. As a result, Follow SEJ on Twitter @sejournal

Hollywood’s Online Video Marketing Efforts For Friday, March 2

Last week’s hyper-marketed Act of Valor ended up being the #1 movie last weekend, and its efforts to strive for realism (real bullets, real SEALs) paid off for a movie that normally might get overlooked.  The videos for Act of Valor didn’t get a tremendous amount of views, but they hit the right people and they turned it into a hit.  This weekend is sparse on releases, but both should be pretty big.  We have Todd Phillips’ over-the-top found footage party movie Project X and an adaptation of a not-well-known Dr. Seuss book, The Lorax

When In Doubt, Leverage Star Wars For Online Video

Let’s take a step back for a moment from the George Lucas hate-a-thon and take a look at Star Wars , the brand, for a moment.  Star Wars is bigger than you or I can imagine.  It’s so big that it has created other universes outside of the original movies and books.  One of the first huge, huge hits on YouTube was that Star Wars kid swinging a pole around in his garage , and it had the most minute connection to Star Wars .  Some of Family Guy ‘s highest rated episodes are those Star Wars parodies.  And recently, a channel called Belated Media is on their way to their first viral hit using Star Wars as fodder.

How Will Hollywood’s Online Video Marketing Efforts Impact Box Office?

Last week we saw the top 2 movies from the previous week switch places and take the top spots from the new releases, as the Ghost Rider sequel failed to emulate any of the success of its predecessor.  Still, it made over $20 million and was cheaper to make than the original, so this isn’t necessarily a sign that we’ve seen the last terrible 3D Nicolas Cage movie.  This week we see My Damn Channel’s David Wain return behind the camera for Wanderlust , a new Tyler Perry movie, a weird, very-awful-looking Amanda Seyfried abduction thriller, and real Navy SEALs make a movie with Act of Valor . Wanderlust: David Wain Is A Funny Dude David Wain has probably made something you like, even though he himself isn’t world-renowned famous.  Back in the 90′s, he was one of the many behind the short-lived comedy show The State .  In 2001, he co-wrote and directed the cult comedy classic Wet Hot American Summer , and he co-wrote and directed the hit Role Models .  He’s written episodes of Adult Swim’s Children’s Hospital .  On the internet, he’s behind My Damn Channel and Wainy Days .
